Chiang Mai Foodie & Local Market

Overview

Everywhere you go in Thailand you'll see the street vendors, preparing and serving a cornucopia of dishes from their simple carts and stalls. Some vendors have mobile carts ranging from baskets balanced on the shoulders to motorbikes welded to portable kitchens. These vendors usually have a set route that they travel throughout the day and Thais often anticipate their arrival like a daily visit from Santa Claus. When a popular vendor comes down the street don't be surprised to Thais pouring onto the street like clowns out of a Volkswagen to get a quick bite of their favourite treats.

Itinerary

Pick up from hotel lobby and depart to Thapae Gate; this eastern main entrance gate is still the main center of Chiang Mai's public city activities and festivals.

Then walk along beautiful Thapae road to the local “Khanom Jeen” or Rice Noodles Restaurant, which has been family owned since 1920. Try a simple staple dish of Northern Thailand, rice noodles with spicy pork sauce. Continue to Saen Fang Temple, was built in the end of 14th century. The colorful chedi was impressive, mosaic-tiled that blends Burmese and Lanna styles.

Next, walk to Warorote Market, the biggest local Market in Chiang Mai which sells everything from clothes and textiles to fruits, herbs, flowers, vegetables, and varieties of foods. Inside the market, stop at local favorite stands and try local famous foods such as Pork Rinds, Thai Sausage, Mango Sticky Rice and Thai snack.

Walk across the pedestrian bridge over Ping River, without any vehicles passing through. Visit to Gate Garaam Temple, structure has distinctly Chinese influence with reliefs of animals and dragons. After that, try Chiang Mai’s famous version of an elegant Thai royal delicacy, “Khao Kriab Pak Moh” or Steamed Rice Thai Dumplings.

Continue to Chiang Mai’s number one “Khao Soi” or Northern Thai Curry Noodles Restaurant, which has been family owned since 1950. Try yellow curry spices, coconut milk, and chicken broth with egg noodles.

Then transfer back to the hotel.
